Computer Security Tips

We encourage students and all library visitors to be mindful of both physical and digital security of laptops and other technology items used in the library and around the Law Center. There are many useful tips provided by the main campus office of University Information Services. In particular, they provide a Safe Computing Quick-Start Checklist and a guide entitled How to Protect Your Computer: Guidelines for Students. Following are additional sources to consider in thinking about the physical and digital security of items such as a laptop computer.

Physical Security

  • Never leave your notebook unattended in public places! It only takes seconds for someone to swipe your computer.
  • Secure your computer to a permanent fixture with a laptop cable or other anti-theft device. Here are some web sites where you can comparison shop for these devices:
  • Password protect your computer, and always lock the its screen or logout when you leave the computer.
  • Register your computer with the Department of Public Safety in McDonough 101; for more information, call 202-662-9325.
